Back in 2022 NHS Charities Together awarded Heads On a grant as part of their Community Partnership Fund to run twelve Anti-Racism in Healthcare training sessions across Sussex. Heads On organised the sessions led by Dr Neil Singh (GP and Senior Teaching Fellow) and Dr Arianne Shahvisi (Senior Lecturer, Medical Ethics), aiming to address the role racism plays in the delivery of healthcare and its impact on staff, patients and patient outcomes.
We are pleased to announce that the project has been a great success, with Neil and Arianne delivering their excellent, thought-provoking content to 804 attendees across Sussex. Covering areas such as Hastings, Eastbourne, Crawley, Chichester, Brighton and Worthing, with many travelling from further afield to attend these sessions.
We still have one more event to come with our Anti-Racism in Healthcare Conference set for March 2024, bringing together a variety of inspired talks and workshops, showcasing anti-racist projects, all geared towards improving the physical and mental wellbeing of minority ethnic groups. You will get insights on how to translate anti-racist theory into everyday practice and how to reduce disparities in access and outcomes for patients. The conference will discuss how to celebrate difference in the workplace and protect staff members from both interpersonal and institutional racism. You can still be part of this important conference by submitting your work on the Brighton Medical School website here or if you would just like to attend the event, you can sign up here.
We would like to thank NHS Charities Together for funding such an important project, BSMS for their support and to share a very special thanks to Dr Neil Singh and Arianne Shahvisi for their work on the presentations, which made the sessions a great success.
After some incredible feedback throughout all our anti-racist events, Heads On are currently discussing with NHS Charities Together the possibility of a second round of funding to support this project further into 2024. Please see the wonderful feedback from some of our attendees across Sussex.
"I believe the training will help me in future to identify and deal with any kind of situations like this that may occur. I'll have to see how well what I learned will transfer back to the job, but I'm confident the training provided me with a lot of insight and necessary tools."
"Really excellent training. I hope I can share the learning and bring meaningful change."
"Fantastic training. Without a doubt, the most helpful training of this kind that I have done. Hugely appreciate the knowledge and expertise of both presenters."
