Giving families space to breathe through woodland activities

The sun was shining last Thursday as staff, stakeholders, service users and their families visited Vert Community Wood in Laughton. It was a celebration of the Woodland Project, run by Circle of Life Rediscovery and the CAMHS Learning Disability / Family Intensive Support Service. The project gives families of children with moderate to severe learning disabilities the chance to spend time together as a family, taking part in activities such as learning how to safely light and cook on a fire, woodland craft and singing and making music around a campfire.
“I just love the sense of freedom, because it’s away from busy crowded towns and cities. I don’t really go out that much anymore so it’s absolutely wonderful for me and my son just to be out here.” – Martin, Father supported by the CAMHS LD / FISS team.
Many of the parents taking part in the project fed back that this is the only time that they are able to spend quality time together as a whole family and that being out in nature is a really calming and relaxing experience. The presence of a clinician means that they feel fully supported at all times.
Daniel McNaught is running the Brighton Marathon for Heads On, on 17th April, in order to raise money so that the Woodland Project can continue it’s great work.
“The Woodland Project is a great opportunity for families of children with learning disabilities to get some space and enjoy some respite. I’m very excited to run the Brighton Marathon to support everything they do.” – Daniel McNaught.
