Living Histories

We are delighted to launch Living Histories, an oral history project celebrating the whole life stories of people who have used and worked in mental health services in Sussex from the closure of the asylums in the 1980's, up to and including the Covid-19 pandemic.

Living Histories is made possible by National Lottery players, through the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the continued support of NHS Charities Together. Thank you.

At the heart of the project are the real-life stories of people whose voices are rarely heard in public historical records, people living with severe and complex mental health conditions, and those who care for and support them. Over the course of a year, 15 volunteers collected and recorded the stories of 35 people who have used and / or worked in mental health services. With their permission, we share these stories through seven podcasts exploring the shared themes woven through these unique experiences.

Thank you to everyone who gave their time to share their stories, to those who collected and recorded them, and everyone involved in making this project possible.
