On Saturday 14th September, Beverley Ryan-Hawes, a nurse at Millview Hospital in Hove, will be walking 800km the length of Northern Spain. She is raising money for a sensory room on Caburn Ward, a ward for women experiencing severe mental distress, and has a fundraising target of £2,500. It will take Beverley five weeks, walking between 20km and 30km a day.
Beverley has been a mental health nurse for twenty years. She said: “The idea of this walk was inspired by realising that as women, we all find ourselves on similar life journeys and experience similar societal pressures and trauma which could lead to any one of us experiencing a form of mental distress and if not healed, a mental breakdown.
Five women were set to do this walk and due to various life events there are now just two of us left. Tragically one of the women - a dear friend and work colleague - took her own life in August. This was believed to be due to a combination of life events and a history of poor mental health. She was only twenty five years old so the fundraising target represents £100 for every year of her life (though of course she was worth much more to all who knew her). This walk is in memory of her and the women who have experienced and continue to experience mental health difficulties.”
