Jade Ward garden re-vamped thanks to Heads On grant
Patients and staff at Jade Ward, Langley Green Hospital, have come together with the Big Plant Company to transform their garden space into a much more welcoming and engaging space, in which patients and staff are able to enjoy time outside.
Langley Green Hospital cares for people facing mental health challenges such as schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, clinical depression and severe anxiety. Around 75% of the people cared for at Langley Green have been detained under the Mental Health Act and so are unable to leave the wards unescorted. The garden is often the only outside space they can access.
Patients have commented:
“I really enjoyed planting the flowers, it really got me out of my head when I was feeling really low”
“Helping make the garden look good made me feel good and that I was able to give something back in life”
Jade Ward staff worked very hard to fundraise for their ward by running marathons and taking part in Walk for Wards to boost the money in their charitable fund and were able to apply to Heads On for a grant of £2000 to fund this project.
Staff on the ward commented:
“It has been lovely seeing service leaders and staff congregate in the garden for cups of tea and chats – those moments are some of the most important.”
A gardening group that came about during the project has flourished and enables patients to take part in therapeutic gardening activities.
Well done to everyone at Jade Ward on your beautiful garden!
